TEXARKANA, AR (KSLA) -
A major drug bust Saturday in Texarkana, Arkansas stopped more than 100 pounds of marijuana from making it to its final destination. The bust happened at the Greyhound bus terminal on East 51st Street.
Officer Jeff Savage and his K-9 partner Zorg routinely check buses coming into the terminal for drugs. He tells us that's their primary responsibility right now, but this bust was a little bit of a surprise.
"...total, about 116 pounds of marijuana," Savage says. "That's the biggest seizure Zorg and I have ever made."
The bricks of marijuana were in suitcases that were under the bus. They're worth more than $220,000.
"The way they packaged it was with the intent of defeating a K-9 search. They had several masking odors in with the bundle."
But Zorg was not fooled, thanks to his training.
"We trained him with masking odors trying to make the finds extremely hard to detect just for this situation," Savage tells us.
He says the Interstate 30 corridor that runs through Texarkana is a major pipeline for narcotics traveling east. This marijuana was going from south Texas to somewhere in the northeast.
"Even though it wasn't coming to Texarkana, it takes it off the streets somewhere else. We have guys further west from us that are taking down loads that are coming here, so it's a group effort."
Officer Savage says it's nice to draw attention to the work Zorg does every day. And for all the hard work it took to make this bust, he gave Zorg some special treats when he got home.
Authorities have not been able to locate the owner of the suitcases. The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to call Texarkana Crime Stoppers at 903-793-STOP (7867).
