SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Fire damaged two homes in Shreveport's Highland neighborhood late Monday morning after home owners said they saw a surge protector in the home spark and catch a baby crib on fire.
Shreveport firefighters were called to the scene in the 500 block of Wall Street near Highland Avenue shortly before 11:00 a.m. There were three family members inside the home when the fire started that morning.
Charlie Lee was one of the members inside the home.
"I was asleep and I heard my dad yelling there was a fire so I got up to see what was going on," said Lee. "I checked in the room and saw that the baby crib was on fire. I went to the bedroom and tried to get a bucket of water and put it out but by the time I got back the whole room was on fire."
Lee said minutes before the fire started there was a baby inside the crib but she was moved when her mother left to go to work that morning. Lee and the rest of his family escaped through the back door to safety.
Nearly a dozen crews from the Shreveport Fire Department arrived three minutes after the 911 call came into dispatch. The house, which was sandwiched between two other homes, received 50 percent damage. The house on the left was slightly damaged when the fire jumped onto its roof.
Jerard Wills and Christopher Washington drove by the fire moments after it started and said they noticed the house on right was also in danger. There were still people inside the home at the time.
"I knocked on the door to get work to the people that were in there that we needed to get you guys out of there," said Wills.
Washington told KSLA News 12 he ran up to the home to check on the residents.
"I proceeded to run inside and get everybody out the house," said Washington. "I saw a little girl just walking around like she was shocked or what have you, so I grabbed her and ran on out the house."
Fortunately, that home was not affected. No one was injured.
