SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Abandoned and blind in one eye by glaucoma, "Spike" was hungry and in pain when he found himself under attack by two neighborhood dogs.
And then things got bad.
According to his story, submitted to a national essay contest by a local animal rescue organization, that was when Spike ran into the street, and was promptly hit by a car.
It's a horrible beginning to a story with a happy and heartwarming ending. Now, the orange tabby's tale could win the $500 grand prize offered in the Iam's 'Most Heartwarming Story' contest.
Gloria Freeman runs the local non-profit animal rescue and adoption organization Animal Welfare, Inc. She says they were recently notified that Spike's story is a finalist in the essay contest organized by the Helen Woodard Animal Center. Voting began on Wednesday and ends on Friday, February 24th.
Spike has since found a loving home and new 'furfamily.'
Freeman says if Spike's story wins, the money would likely go directly toward helping another animal currently in their care: Molly, a 12-year-old abandoned Border Collie.
