New billboards urge drivers to "share the road"

Posted: Updated:

New billboards just went up across the Shreveport-Bossier area urging drivers to share the road.

A local attorney and cyclist, John Settle, decided to put them up after 4 Ark-La-Tex cyclists were injured in 3 different accidents just a few weeks ago. The billboard reads, "Share the road. It's the law."

Settle hopes they will raise awareness that drivers are supposed to leave at least 3 feet of space if they pass a cyclist on the road.  He also wanted people to know that cyclists do have a right to ride on roads and highways.

"It's illegal for cyclists to ride on sidewalks. It would be a hazard for pedestrians, but the main reason, it's illegal to do that. It is legal for us to ride on the highways, 2 abreast, and that's why we ride there," said Settle.

Cyclists are supposed to ride as far to the right as they can, and they should not ride with more than two cyclists side by side.
