QUITMAN COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -
Two young men were arrested in Quitman County early Wednesday morning after sending sheriff deputies on a wild goose chase.
Quitman County dispatch received a call about a person with a gun just before midnight in the Morris area of Georgetown.
According to Quitman County Sheriff, Steve Newton, the call turned out to be a rouse to lure police away from a burglary that happened just minutes away from the sheriff's office on Main Street at Georgetown Pawn Shop.
Surveillance video captured 17-year-old Robert Billings and 20-year-old Marquis Johnson breaking the front door down with a hatchet and stealing several video games.
The two were later identified by people in the community and turned themselves in Wednesday morning.
Billings was released from the Miller County Jail on a $2,000 bond, while Johnson remains in jail on a probation hold. They both are facing felony theft charges.
"I am very pleased with the smart heads-up action of our dispatchers and the professionalism the deputies displayed in working this case. I am also grateful to the community for their support and cooperation. This is the second serious felony crime in two weeks where my deputies have worked professionally with the community and taken the suspects into custody just a few hours after the crimes," said Sheriff Newton.
