SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Foam and gunk floating along the Red River was the cause of some concern for a few ArkLaTex residents. KSLA News 12 received several phone calls asking us to investigate. Facebook was also buzzing about the foam.
To get an idea of where this foam was coming from the Caddo Parish Sheriff's office agreed to take KSLA News 12 and the Louisiana DEQ out to collect some samples.
"We're checking temperature, Ph, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity," said Ronnie Kay with the Louisiana DEQ
To gather the sample we were taken to an area where the brown foam could be found. They dropped in a device that does the tests, and after the reading came back the Red River got a clean bill of health.
"Our field readings showed that there is nothing to worry about, and all the water quality numbers were good," said Ronnie Kay with the Louisiana DEQ.
The DEQ said the most likely cause of the foam is the high amount of rain we have had over the past week.
"We've had a lot of rain from the Dallas Fort Worth area to about Fort Smith Arkansas. It's this big patch where we've had about 6 to 10 inches of rain in the last 30 days. All of that then drains into the Red River Basin, then flows right through downtown Shreveport," said KSLA News 12's Storm Tracker Steve
Combine that with the soil being pulled in by the high water, and the dead decaying leaves from the winter and it is the perfect mixture for all natural, pollutant free foam.
