Last Wednesday, I received an interesting email, which reads:
"My name is Grace Gilpin. I am a seventh grader who attends Cope Middle School. Cope was built approximately 40 years ago. The science tables in two of our science rooms are just that old! These desks are out dated. They also have a series of nails sticking out of them! Some of the table legs are not sturdy enough for the tables themselves."
Grace sent me the email because she, her classmates and teachers need help. This seventh grader has taken it upon herself to try and raise money to replace the tables in the science lab.
They need about $6,000.
First of all, way to go Grace. Here's a young lady with great initiative. It's just too bad a seventh grader has to do this.
A spokesperson for the Bossier Parish School District said they do have a budget to replace furniture, but that a request was not submitted to replace the tables in this particular lab.
As a result, the students and teachers have taken it upon themselves to get it done.
I bet there are stories just like this in every school district in our area. We commend them for their efforts. I'm James Smith.
