Qualifying for the primary election in Louisiana is now over. We now know who's running for which races, statewide and local.
Now it's time for the candidates and the voters to get to know each other.
It's a complicated process in which we all need to play an active role.
The candidates must campaign to win our votes. The news media has to give fair and extensive coverage of the issues, and voters need to pay attention and go to the polls.
There is concern, because of the lack of viable candidates for statewide offices. Although there are multiple candidates in the race for Governor; for example, the only contender with the financial backing to win is incumbent Governor Bobby Jindal.
Because of this, a low voter turnout is very possible. We encourage everyone to vote.
Electing people to office is like hiring a new employee. The right decision is wonderful, but if you make a bad hire, it can be a nightmare. Let's hire the right people.
I'm James Smith.
