June 12: Flash Floods Warning

Posted: Updated:

Flash Flood Warnings are not uncommon in the Ark-La-Tex. Sometimes we can take the warnings for granted, not paying them much attention.

This month; however, marks a grim anniversary and it should serve as a reminder to us all.

It was one year ago when a Flash Flood swept through the Albert Pike Recreation area in Southwest Arkansas. In an instant, 20 campers were killed.

The little Missouri River is normally calm, but on that night it quickly became a raging torrent.

Just this Spring in the very same area, a group of boy scouts had to be rescued because of flash flooding.

Tragedies like these can be avoided, especially when it comes to flooding. There is usually plenty of warning, you just have to pay attention, use some common sense and take them seriously.

I'm James Smith.

Thank you for writing to me.

My intention in doing the editorial was to remind everyone about what happened that night so hopefully it will not happen again.  My goal was to make sure people are aware of the dangers of flash flooding.  It was in no way intended to be critical of those killed at the park.  In fact, subsequent investigations have shown those at the park were not adequately warned.

I want you to know I am recording another editorial on this tragedy that will air Wednesday and Thursday.  In that editorial I'm making it crystal clear that those who died in the flash flood at the Albert Pike campground did not have adequate warning.

Again it was not my intention to suggest your loved ones were careless. My intention was only to make others aware of the importance of flash flood warnings and flash flood watches.

I'm sorry if I added to your stress during this difficult time.
