Are you more like an apple or a pear? In other words, do you carry excess weight in your belly or bottom? Well scientists once believed body shape could help predict heart disease risk, but a new study puts that theory to rest.
Researchers followed more than 220,000 people in 17 countries for almost a decade and found obesity in any shape is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
Participants underwent three measurements:Body Mass Index, Waist Circumference, Waist to Hip ratio. Researchers also took into account age, smoking history and other factors.
All three-body measurements fared the same when it came to predicting heart disease.
Measuring your waist, or calculating your BMI, are great ways to check your health.
If your BMI is over 25, or you're a man with a waist larger than 40 inches, or a woman with one more than 35 inches, your heart could be at risk.
