Mar. 23: Welcome Home Vietnam Vets editorial

Posted: Updated:

It has taken 38 years, but this month the men and women who fought and also died in the Vietnam War are being honored. The U.S. Senate passed a resolution that designates March 30th as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veteran's Day."

58,000 Americans lost their lives in the war. The hundreds of thousands of soldiers who did return, did not receive the proper recognition when they got home.

As you may recall, it was a time of often violent anti-war protests and our men and women in the armed services were often the target of these protests.

March 30 marks the anniversary of the day that combat units withdrew completely from South Vietnam. It now will mark a special day to remember Vietnam veterans.

The Ark-La-Tex has always had a high regard for our military, but we can and probably should do more for our nation's heroes. It is never too late to let these war heroes know that our community cares about them.

On March 30th you can do just that. It's Welcome Home Vietnam, Veterans Day.

I'm James Smith.
