Feb. 20 :Texas Prisoner Release proposal editorial

Posted: Updated:

Here's an interesting idea. Let prisoners out of jail to save money. That's what's being discussed in Texas right now as lawmakers try and deal with a $15 billion shortfall.

The idea is to let prisoners identified as 'non-violent' out of jail, releasing them back to you and me. Who would qualify? Drug offenders, burglars, robbers, car thieves.

The problem is, there is a good chance they would return to a life of crime and although they may not physically hurt anyone; having your car stolen or your house broken into or a crack dealer trying to sell your kid drugs isn't any fun either.

The fact is, keeping people in prison is expensive. Releasing some prisoners back into society is one way to cut the costs, but it's essential these prisoner releases are done with some thought going into it. Each should be judged on an individual basis.

The last thing we need are criminals back on the street, committing more crimes and again clogging up the criminal justice system.

Although this is being discussed in Texas, you can bet other states like Louisiana and Arkansas won't be far behind. Let me know what you think. I'm James Smith.
