RAMAH, La. (AP) - Police say a tractor-trailer overturned and spilled caustic soda on Interstate 10, closing all lanes of the highway between Ramah and U.S. 415 in Port Allen.
Maj. Johnny Blanchard of the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office told The Advocate that nobody lives in the immediate area of Thursday's accident.
He says the biggest concern was getting traffic rerouted to U.S. 190.
He said the Louisiana State Police Hazardous Materials team was assessing the spill.
Caustic soda and lye are both commmon names for sodium hydroxide - a strong corrosive used in bleaches and cleaning products, and in many chemical processes including petroleum refining and making synthetic fabrics.
