2nd ex-New Orleans cop charged in Katrina coverup

Associated Press - March 9, 2010 6:44 PM ET

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A second ex-New Orleans officer charged in a conspiracy to cover up a deadly police shooting of unarmed residents after Hurricane Katrina is expected to plead guilty.

A person familiar with the case unsealed Tuesday against former detective Jeffrey Lehrmann said his guilty plea is expected later this week in federal court. The person was not authorized to discuss the plea negotiations and asked not to be identified. Lehrmann faces a charge of misprision of a felony, which means misconduct.

Lehrmann is now a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Arizona.

Police are accused of fabricating witness statements, falsifying reports and planting a gun to make it appear the shootings were justified.

Michael Lohman, a retired lieutenant, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to obstruct justice.
